Creating Culture (part 1)
We are continuing the conversation about creating culture. In this post I want to ask a couple of initial questions that help to identify ways in which the Internet Campus helps make sense of the world around us. These initial questions are open to discussion, I will give my initial thoughts and then let’s continue the conversation in the comments section.
1) What does the Internet campus assume about the way the world is?
The world is connected. The internet has crushed global communication boundaries that were in place just 10-20 years ago; Skype, Facebook, Twitter, and TokBox are just a few of the tools that have spawned out of this communication revolution. Communicating with friends and connecting with strangers has never been available in the capacity it is today. The world is flat. Transportation has also revolutionized the way in which people move about the world around them. Families are mobile. This mobility has given families the freedom to ‘move about the cabin’ with ease. Because of this mobility and freedom activities become a checkbox on a weekly to do list… Church is important but to be an inflexible/unchanging event every week is contrary to the lifestyle of this mobile generation. The ability to have multiple options has become a entitlement of the this Mobile Digital World.
2) What does the Internet Campus assume about the way the world should be?
The Internet Campus assumes this mobile/digital world and asserts that you should have multiple options of where and when you can experience Church and Community. It assumes that people will respond better if given the opportunity to connect with their home church – at home in their pajamas, on the road in a hotel room, or overseas on a business trip. It assumes your church community should be as accessible as your Facebook community.
What do you think?

Great post. Here is a question that I would like to see some discussion on:
What unique mission opportunities will an Internet Campus community be involved in that you may not typically find with a physical campus?
Do we create culture or respond to it? Love it when the church innovates and doesn't necessarily copy a tool, marketing plan, or art form. Adrian as far as unique mission opps we get to keep 1 foot in the virtual world and 1 on the block where we live. It is the epitome of thinking globally and acting locally. Connect and influence on your laptop or hand held then go rake your neighbors leaves. Find a real need on FB or Twitter and go meet it with your tribe. Fun!
To me, this video makes the case for what the Internet Campus assumes about the way the world is: http://bit.ly/3ynw.The world is changing with lightspeed velocity, and as the Church, we must be a part of it.
this is a rabbit trail –> Absolutely Lori… This is reality of today that many still in the U.S. are ignorant to (ignorant – not in a derogatory way… THEY JUST DON'T KNOW!!). What scares me most about this is the consumption factor. America's Youth have been in a rut of consumption and entertainment which is causing a lack in our educational progress (in my opinion)…
I agree Lori. We need to keep up and need to be educated. There are so many souls out there that need to be reached, but can't or won't go to church. We need to be where they are: at home in pj's, on business trips, on vacation, on a break at work, or at a local coffee shop. Thank you for sharing that video. I will be sharing it with friends.
I think the internet has greatly expanded our capability to be the Church, because it fosters connectivity in a major way. I'm not sure if the internet can replace meeting in a physical location with other believers, but it can be an awesome supplement to that, as well as a constant reminder that the church is not a building but a body of believers.
I Agree!

I would agree that the church needs to present options for communication and community as a church. The danger is that we think that innovation or technology presents the entire picture. The church that I am a part of has needs for all types of communication and we have a wide range of options for them. I like the approach the the internet campus has taken which is to provide those options to people. People need to be connected and the church needs to be a place where that can happen. I believe that it is important that we focus on the function of the church rather that its form.
It assumes that everyone is connected. They're not. But it is a new tool to build relationships between people. I'm sure Jesus used the tools that were avaible when He was a carpenter. We read about the tools he used in ministry in the scripture. He talked to indiviuals, He talked to groups, He sent people out to talk on His behalf. He may have had other ways as well. I feel certain that He would use of the tools of today and I think He expects us to as well.
I agree, though not everyone is connected, there are so many people out there that can be reached through emerging technology. God has made me passionate about using technology to reach people. For too long I have used technology for my own personal gains and often times felt guilty about spending so much time on facebook. However, once I started using Facebook as a tool to reach people who were not in church…I no longer felt guilty. Instead I developed a new passion. The Holy Spirit has convicted me to explore the tools out there and find new ways to create community, to reach people.
I like that Dooly… finding ways to bring light to this dark world, no matter the environment.
