Interesting stuff. I grew up in a hell-fire and brimstone brewing pentecostal Church. Learned (this word was chosen deliberately) to speak in tongues at a very early age. But I’ve only recently come to understand that being filled with the Spirit is to come under His control even in spite of the fact that I’ve lived a “Christian” life my entire life.
Do I believe that speaking in tongues is legit. I do. Its definitely Biblical. Do I believe its abused and poorly utilized “gift” in some circles? You bet I do. Do I speak in tongues today? I wouldn’t tarnish the beauty of the genuine gift by assuming that I have this gift.
But I think the gift is completely irrelevant. Are we under the spirits control – 100%? That is where we need to concentrate our efforts and our minds. Yielding our lives to His 100% so that we might all be completely filled with the spirit. And who knows what would happen that day? Pentecost the Sequel? Christ’s return? Galactic paradigmatic mind shifts? definitely.
1 Corinthians 14:2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men (why it sounds like gibberish to men) but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.
Got a problem with tongues, talk to God about it but be careful of critisizing what you don’t understand. Oftentimes we lack knowledge and then later a little comes and we can embarrassed for the things we said prior to our enlightenment.
I have been there.
I have been in both extremes, tongue talking full out pentecostal churches and consertaive hard line baptist. I suppose it is as said in scripture, if it be of God no man can stop it, it is not of God it will fail. Let’s be careful what we condemn and also what we promote. Let it be Christ and him crucified. All else is either icing on the cake or useless decrations. I stand in Christ alone, all other ground is sinking sand. Amen?
There are two types of tongues. The first one comes as a part of the package for all believers Mark 16:15-18 which is manifested when a believer is baptised in the Holy Spirit. Whether a believer utilises it or not it does not change the word of God howevert the benefits are great. For we do not know how to pray but the Spirit helps us in our infirmities with groaning that cannot be uttered Romans 8:26. I will pray in the spirit and i will pray in with understanding, i will sing in the spirit and i will sing with understanding 1 cor 14:15.
The second type of tongues are the ones which come as the Spirit wills as a result of desiring after spiritual gifts and come as a message for a church and need interpretation. 1 cor 12:10.
Of course Love is greater than spiritual or natural gifts that is not to say the gifts should not be used Love should be the driving force of exercising these gifts. God bless.
