The Bullseye

This week we are remembering the forgotten virtue of purity.  Purity is being free of contamination and free of immorality.  The word holiness also comes to mind.  Why have we lost these virtues?  One problem is that many times those who confess Jesus as their Lord seem to focus on how close they can get to the world’s standard (in the name of “cultural relevance”) than how close they can get to God’s standard.  I believe the problem and solution has everything to do with focus.

Here is a quick thought coming from 1 John 2:15-17:
Have you ever seen shooting in the Olympics?  The intensity and focus is almost unnerving.  Each shooter relaxes every muscle and aims carefully.  Then, at the last moment, they release their breath, steady themselves, and shoot.  Nothing less than a perfect bullseye is desired.

Loving Christ is the bullseye.  Do you have that kind of intensity in your relationship with Christ, or do other things win in the competition for your love?  Where do your affections lie?  What draws your intensity and passion?  What is your greatest desire?  Is it the world and the things in it, or is it the God who created it?  In 1 John 2:15-17, the “world” that John refers to is those things that oppose the glory, honor, and character of our God.  Where has the “world” infiltrated your heart?  Do not love the world.  Our hearts were meant for a singular focus.  Aim true.

Prayer: Lord, forgive me for entertaining the distractions in my life.  I desire to love you only.
