What Help Looks Like
On May 16 of this year Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA was hit by a disastrous hail storm. It’s estimated that more people experienced costly damage to their homes and cars in this part of the world than ever before. Both the home and car of Fallon Brooks, a LifeChurch.tv partner, were harmed. As you can imagine, it’s difficult having broken windows and roof damage in one’s home in addition to no car to drive (in an area with no public transportation available).
Here is a video Fallon filmed during the hail storm. You can hear glass breaking in her house and get a sense of the frantic feeling she had during the storm.
This is Fallon’s account as well as some great examples of how people in her community reached out to help her:
“My front windshield and one side window were completely busted out in my car. Every single panel of the car had dents in it, plus the headlights were busted out. There was so much glass inside the car that they would have to have replaced the carpet inside the car as well, so the car was considered a total loss. For the first week, I couldn’t get anyone out to replace the windshield with a mobile unit, so my insurance company arranged for a tow and a replacement windshield so my car was at least driveable. The first week without a car was a nightmare though. I’m a really mobile person. I depend on my car a lot for my job. My LifeGroup was awesome through the ordeal. I was stuck working really late nights at the office, so I wasn’t able to run out and grab dinner or go home to feed the dog in the evenings. Without fail, someone was at my office every evening to bring me dinner. They also took my dog out for walks, made sure she got fed and they made sure all the glass was cleaned up in my kitchen and bathroom where the windows broke. They were just awesome. My house is still in a pretty sad state. I had several windows broken out, my roof has holes the size of my fist in them, and my vinyl siding was obliterated. My LifeGroup co-leader helped me clean up every downed limb in my yard from the storm. It took the two of us 5 hours to get it all cleaned up. I’m so thankful for my friends and LifeGroupers through all that. Since I’m in Oklahoma with no family, they’ve really stepped up and become that for me.”
When has someone helped you out following a rough experience in life? Who could you reach out to today?
